    Hi everyone!
I’m new to this forum AND new to welding. So new, in fact, that I haven’t welded anything yet, but am watching videos, reading and absorbing as much as I can.
I am the proverbial “Tim the Tool Man,” but have never owned a welder. Last December my daughter asked, “What tool do you NOT own?
I own multiples of most tools from reciprocating saws, chop saws, radial arm saws, table saws, corded and battery powered drills, grinders, buffers, and much much more.
So I told her that I didn’t have a welder. For Christmas, she bought for me a Lincoln Electric 140HD PLUS a Spool Gun for aluminum wire, auto-darkening helmet, gloves, many, many accessories. Yes, I am one lucky man.

My first project will be to build a solar powered driveway gate (10’ single gate) for her and I’ve been drawing plans and calculating material amounts needed, but haven’t decided between mild steel or aluminum. I know that aluminum is a big step for a newbie.

I look forward to learning from your collective wisdom.

Hi Bud and welcome to the forum. The gate project sounds like a lot of fun. Be sure to post some photos and your progress as you go forward with it.
