I never knew why some had lines on them.

now you know :)

alot of people dont know there are different grade of bolts, not to mention that the markings on bolt heads are designations for the different bolt grades.. its good information to know, especially if your purchasing bolts and or welding and fabricating at home..

also keep in mind that the shear strength isnt mentioned, i will try n find the shear strength n post that up later. another bit of nut n bolt info is the thread depth of the diameter of the bolt is all it will hold.... meaning a 1/4 inch bolt, the nut is gonna be 1/4 inch thick, trying to find a barrel nut that is twice as long will not hold any more pressure, so it is a waste. 5/16 bolt, the nut is 5/16 thick and so on

I knew generally what the markings meant but not the specific numbers that is good to know.

When I worked for the antique car shop one of the things I had to do was machine the markings off bolts so they would look old. Really old bolts don't have any markings.

Great info! Anything on metric?

metric is pretty much the same thing except the designation will be a number instead of hatch marks. 10.8 is the same as a grade 8 and thats all i can remember right now...
