Got a new grinder

I just bought the Porter Cable 7.5 amp 4 1/2" small grinder. Don't exactly know why they call it "small" as it is quite larger than my HF 4 1/2" grinders. I like it a lot but have one complaint, it does not hold the thin cut off wheels but I did get some reasonably thin cutoff wheels from my airgass guy that do the job so overall I'm happy. Got it at Lowes for $39.99

I just bought a 41/2" cut-off wheel today called a "Pipeline Cut-off Wheel" which I'd never seen before. It's about twice as thick as the wheels I'm used to. I have not tried it yet to comment on how it works, but maybe it would work for your grinder if you could find one, and if the thickness of the wheel is the problem.

How does quality compare to the HF? I know you won't really know that until something wears out or breaks but I am curious what your initial impression is.

the pipeline cut off wheels arent actual cut off wheels...... they are for grinding out the root pass and interpasses on smaller pipe.... they are thinner to be able to reach down into the groove. norzon makes a hubbed cut off wheel......

if you will take the face nut (the one that you loosen to get the stone off) and flip it over, you will find that it will hold a standard zip disc... they come with a raised edge on one side to set down inside the 1/4 inch stones to keep vibration and spinning to a minimum. i use 6 inch zip discs on my 4 1/2 grinders all the time

No comparison to a HF grinder, the PC is heads and shoulders above the HF in every way

Sic, the Porter Cable won't work that way as the holes for tightening don't go all the way through. The HF ones you just flip the backing washer on the shaft and it works for thinner cut off wheels but the backing washer is not reversible on the PC.

Turns out I was wrong about not being able to reverse the nut, I just changed wheels and the collar from the first ever wheel had came loose from the wheel and stuck on the shoulder of the nut. Now I'm even happier with my new toy.
